Copper yields to pressure, not force. This course introduces students to embossing still-life imagery in copper using low-tech methods that eliminate the use of pitch. We will concentrate on clarity of form, low relief, and direct engagement with the material using a drawing tool.

You will work from observed still-life setup and learn to translate volume, proportion, and spatial relationships into raised relief using a hand tool, soft backing materials, and repeated working from the front and back of the soft copper sheet. Instruction covers copper preparation, safe tool use, incremental forming, and surface refinement, with an emphasis on simplicity and efficiency in process.

Using thin 0.1mm copper the course prioritises adaptability and immediacy, making embossing approachable without sacrificing rigor. Attention is given to how light defines form in relief and how deliberate pressure creates depth and rhythm across the surface.

Patination of the drawing will enhance the design and finish with wax.

In the end you will have a finished copper still-life picture and practical embossing skills that can be transfer easily to metalsmithing, sculpture, card making and mixed-media practices—grounded in patience, precision, and respect for the material.
