Sarn y Plas - Ann Catrin Evans

Sarn y Plas - Ann Catrin Evans

We are delighted to share news of a very special collaboration between one of our makers - Ann Catrin Evans, Joseph Twm, and poet Anni Llyn. Together they’ve been commissioned by Llenyddiaeth Cymru and National Trust Wales to create a new artwork for Sarn y Plas, the historic cottage once home to poet R. S. Thomas and artist Elsie Eldridge. This commission marks the official opening of the house under the care of the National Trust, and it feels particularly meaningful to contribute to such an inspiring place.

Ann and Joe and are working together on a sculpture titled “Y Gadair Gerdd” (The Poem Chair), while Anni has written a poem that will be engraved into the piece. Her poem, “Eiliad” (“One Second”). Having the words and sculpture entwined in this way makes the artwork both physical and lyrical – a seat for stillness and thought, but also for poetry itself.

The sculpture will be built over the Winter and installed in the garden at Sarn y Plas ready for Spring 2026. It will be crafted from Corten Steel, a material chosen not only for its strength but for its deep, earthy beauty. The model we’ve been working from is currently made of painted foam board, but the final piece will bring scale, permanence, and warmth to the garden.

We’re excited to see Y Gadair Gerdd in its new home at Sarn y Plas, where it will welcome visitors to pause, sit, and reflect.
