From the Quarry to the Workshop

11th + 12th May 2019

10am - 4pm (both days)

With Dave Stephen.

Visit the quarry source of this amazing natural material then discover how to hand work the slate with traditional methods to make a unique, functional or decorative piece.

Day 1: Explore some of the amazing remnants of the once mighty Welsh slate industry on a guided walk around a local slate quarry and other sites. Our tutor Dave is an experienced, fully qualified mountain leader as well as creator of beautiful objects and his knowledge gained over 30 years in the mountains of Snowdonia will set the scene for working with this versatile material.

Day 2: Learn traditional hand working techniques to create your own unique object in Welsh Slate. This wonderful material created over millions of years can be carved, cut, and oiled in numerous ways to reveal it’s many natural colours. Your creation could be a practical item such as a mirror, or a more abstract piece such as a picture or wall hanging.

The walking trip and making day will continue rain or shine and as the Welsh mountain weather is notoriously changeable it is essential that you have suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear for day 1.

Dave Stephen is a slate artist and musician, based in North West Wales where he creates both sculptural and functional objects from slate. He has spent over 30 years in the mountains of Snowdonia as a trainer and outdoor instructor and this initiated his fascination for the slate industry and exploring the old quarries. He has been working with slate since 1998 and supplies galleries/outlets throughout North wales with his work, most of which is made using hand-working techniques. He is one of the Siop iard partners.
